Glenn C. Morse
Glenn C. Morse, one of two members of the five-person Essex Regional Retirement Board elected directly by its active and retired membership.
Morse could be called a man of all seasons-a professional ball player, Korean War veteran, airline executive, purchasing agent.
Born in Milford, Massachusetts, he graduated from St. Mary's Central Catholic High School in Milford. He went on to play first base with the Detroit Tigers farm system in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. But he realized he couldn't hit the deuce (curve ball). Fortunately, his athletic talents included football and he attended UMass Amherst on scholarship. He followed that with three years service in the Army during the Korean conflict.
On his return home, Glenn attended Boston University under the G.I. bill, graduating in 1959.
For the next 13 years he was with British Overseas Airways Corporation. He moved seven times in five years, spending six months in Asia and nearly a year in Spain. Morse went on to join Emery Air Freight's International Division and remained with the company until returning to his Bay State roots.
Morse was appointed purchasing agent for Essex County in 1974 and remained in that position until he retired in 1999.
Glenn was elected a member of the retirement board in 1998 just as the new Essex Regional Retirement Board was created. He served on the Building Committee of the Board. His years of experience as a purchasing agent were invaluable in the acquisition of furniture, computer systems, telephone systems and in the build-out of our office space, providing an up-to-date professional office, most importantly on budget.
Glenn serves on the Board's Customer Service Committee, which focuses on improving communications with our members to keep them updated and informed about their pension system. To date the committee has introduced a bi-annual newsletter, a toll-free telephone number to serve our long distance members, and annual Town Meetings and Office Hours in all of our member units.
Glenn also serves on the Board's Legislative Committee, which works with the Legislature to improve benefits for active and retired members.
