William Martineau

William P. Martineau is one of the two members of the Essex Regional Retirement Board elected directly by its 4,300 active and retired members.
Bill is a 28-year veteran of the North Andover Fire Department serving in the rank of Chief. A resident of North Andover, he and his wife Susan have a daughter, Lyndsey.
As a former president of Local 2035 of the International Association of Firefighters, he understands retirement issues and ran for his seat to help with these concerns. He was elected over five other candidates for his first term in and is now serving in his fourth term. Bill encourages active members of the system to take advantage of deferred compensation provisions to help enhance retirement benefits through a tax-deferred plan.
Bill serves on the Board's Legislative Committee. This committee gave a second chance to honorably discharged veterans who served during a national conflict or emergency. This law allows veterans the right to purchase up to four years of service. Trying to help active and retired members is really just an extension of what I do for a living as a fire-fighter, Martineau says.
Bill also serves on the Board's Customer Service Committee, which focuses on improving communications with our members to keep them updated and informed about their pension system. To date the committee has introduced a bi-annual newsletter, a toll-free telephone number to serve our long distance members, and annual Office Hours in all of our member communities.
I look forward to keeping in close touch with those we serve so that we can help active members maximize their retirement investments while protecting and serving our members who are already receiving their fixed, guaranteed retirement benefits, Martineau said.
When he is not on duty with the fire department or assisting the Retirement Board in its efforts, Bill most enjoys saltwater fishing and golf.
